DeMeco Ryans Breaks Down Texans 'Very Tough' Opener vs. Ravens
HOUSTON — The NFL released its schedule for the 2023 campaign, and the Houston Texans will open their 21st season on the road against the Baltimore Ravens.
Sept. 10 at M&T Bank Stadium will mark the start of DeMeco Ryans' first game as coach of the Texans. And Ryans described the Week 1 contest as "tough" but "exciting."
"You’re always excited to see where that first game is, and we get the opportunity to go up to Baltimore versus a very tough team," Ryans said. "Lamar Jackson. Going to be a tough matchup. They added some firepower to the offense this offseason. A great challenge for us to start out. We’re excited about that."
Week 2 of the 2020 season marked the last time the Texans played against the Ravens. Jackson led Baltimore to a 33-16 victory inside NRG Stadium by throwing for 206 yards, one touchdown while adding 55 yards in rushing.
The Ravens, who signed Jackson to a five-year extension worth $260 million in March, have added arguably the best set of weapons around the former league MVP quarterback. They signed veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and drafted wideout prospect Zay Flowers with the No. 22 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Texans' contest against the Ravens will mark the start of a new era. But the former All-Pro linebacker is keener on their Week 2 home opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 17.
"More excited about the home opener where we get the opportunity to play for our hometown," Ryans said. "Playing in front of our fans, and hopefully we can go out against our divisional opponent and put on a good show for the fans of Houston."
The Texans tied with the Colts during their season opener for the 2022 campaign. As a result, Houston has put together a 1-1-1 record in Week 1 contests since 2020.
