'Great Experience!' Josh McCown Offers Insight Into Texans Interview Process

Josh McCown discussed what it was like going through the interview process to be the Houston Texans head coach.

The Houston Texans have had a productive offseason. They've added more talent to their roster to further the rebuild, taking another big step forward towards contending once again.

Not only did they add talent to the roster, though, but they hired a new head coach in DeMeco Ryans. Ryans is a former player for the franchise who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, gives Houston plenty of reasons to be excited.

However, he was far from the only coach they hired during the process of finding their guy. One of those other options interviewed was former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, who was hired by the Carolina Panthers as their quarterbacks coach this offseason. McCown opened up about what the process was like interviewing with Houston.

“It was a great experience, I appreciate them having me involved in that process,” McCown said. “But really, for me, just being here, this was the right thing. And this is what I’m excited about."

"Things happen for a reason and I certainly am valuing every day that I step into this building and get to be around coach [Frank] Reich and guys like coach [Jim] Caldwell and coach [Ejiro] Evero. We have fantastic people."

Ultimately, the Texans went with Ryans and are more than happy to have him lead them moving toward contention once again. McCown, for now, will mentor No. 1 pick Bryce Young as he continues to gain coaching knowledge and work his way up the coaching ladder. 

"So that’s what I’m focused on, is continuing to be the best quarterbacks coach I can be in this opportunity within this organization," McCown said. And then we obviously have a huge task on our hands with the No. 1 pick and growing Bryce [Young] and bringing him along. 

"So, that’s the focus and good experience, but that’s in the rearview.”
