Texans 'Burning Question': Can QB C.J. Stroud Win Starting Job?
When Roger Goodell announced that the Houston Texans took Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick it signaled their faith in him to be the next franchise quarterback.
Even though Stroud is the presumed starter by many, there has yet to be an official announcement of such by DeMeco Ryans. With training camp starting up, CBS Sports believes one of the burning questions Houston faces is rather simple - has Stroud earned the starting job?
"Stroud will likely start Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, but I want to know if he's truly earned the job," CBS Sports writes. "That's something everyone will be looking for in training camp, and through the preseason."
As it currently stands Stroud finds himself competing for the starting job with the incumbent Davis Mills. However, if his numbers from Ohio State are an indicator, then Houston is in good hands if he wins the job.
"Stroud led an Ohio State offense that was No. 1 in the FBS in points per game (45.0) and yards per game (526.0) over the past two seasons," CBS Sports wrote. "There were some rumblings about his "football IQ" because of his alleged scores on the S2 test."
"The bottom line is that the Texans need a franchise quarterback, and Stroud's chance to fill that void begins now."
There is no telling when the Texans' starting quarterback for this season will be named, whether it be Stroud or Mills. But if it is indeed Stroud, then the future of the franchise could come sooner than most expected.
