Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Must Draft QB Anthony Richardson - ESPN's Dan Orlovsky
We're never quite certain if ESPN's Dan Orlovsky - who obviously knows his football - is "doing serious NFL analysis'' or is "doing a bit.'' So we offer his opinion on the Houston Texans' next big step advisedly.
After the world learned that the Texans had hired San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to his "dream job'' to be the new head coach in Houston, Orlovsky took to Twitter to spit out a serious of hot takes as to what Ryans should do with his new offense.
To wit ...
"(Ryans) needs to bring an offensive coordinator with 'em and hit on the QB," Orlovsky said. "Meco played in Houston under [Gary Kubiak], and has been in San Francisco with (head coach) Kyle Shanahan. Whoever he brings as an coordinator is sure as heck going to come from those routes ...''
See what we mean? Ryans "needs a coordinator''? Of course. He played under Kubiak? So what? His top assistant "sure as heck will come from those routes''? What does that even mean?
But then Orlovsky adds, "and the QB that comes to mind first: Anthony Richardson. See how it plays out."
Richardson, a standout at the University of Florida, has the physical tools at 6-foot-4 and 232 pounds. He is universally seen as a sure-fire first-round pick in the April NFL Draft, but is not seen as a sure thing - certainly not in comparison to Bryce Young and CJ Stroud.
So is Orlovsky saying the Texans, who have the No. 2 overall pick, should take a QB who isn't ranked among the top two QBs? Is he venturing far into too-early projections by suggesting a trade-down? Is he saying Houston should pass on the top guys and land Richardson with the 12th overall pick, which the Texans also own?
We'll probably need to see all of the other "sure-as-heck routes'' (whatever that means) unfold before we know. ... and we'll need much more info to know whether Dan Orlovsky is trying to inform Texans fans - or just sputtering out nonsense.
"See how it plays out''? Yes, Dan. That's probably good advice.
