Texans Keeping RBs Coach Danny Barrett on DeMeco Ryans' Staff
The Houston Texans are retaining running backs coach Danny Barrett for the first season under new head coach DeMeco Ryans, According to reports.
Barrett, who was a major factor in helping rookie running back Dameon Pierce to a stellar first NFL season, is now set to be a part of his fourth different coaching regime since joining the team in 2018. Barrett has seen Bill O'Brien, David Culley and now, Lovie Smith, all be relieved of their duties.
Barrett has experience as both a quarterbacks and running backs coach dating back to his time with the Calgary Stampeders in 1997. The 61-year-old landed his first NFL gig as a running backs coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2016 before quickly making his way to Houston.
Despite the Texans averaging the second-fewest rushing yards per game (86.8) this past season, the team would have been hard-pressed to find any success during a 3-13-1 season without the play of Pierce.
Though he missed the final four games of the year due to injury, Pierce was the clear RB1 for the Texans, as an early-season emergence allowed him to retain momentum throughout the campaign.
This was on-the-field proof of what Barrett was doing behind the scenes, as the Texans will be hoping this continues headed into next season with a new head coach and a more-experienced Pierce.
