Texans Coach Chris Kiffin Praises 'Very Explosive' LB Christian Harris
There are not many positive things that can be said about the Houston Texans on defense last season. Simply put, they were statistically one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
However, there is hope to be had that this season will see a turnaround on that side of the ball. Not only did they hire former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to be their new coach, but they have a talented group of second-year defenders - including linebacker Christian Harris.
While it was a strong debut season for Harris, the potential was shown to be a foundational piece of the Texans' defense. As he looks to take that next step in 2023, linebackers coach Chris Kiffin had plenty of praise for the young defender.
"The range jumps off the tape,” Kiffin told KPRC 2. “The ability to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, he can accelerate. He’s very explosive I think for him it’s taking the next step in his game."
"He got the chance to play in a number of games as a rookie. So, now, really getting the new scheme, learning it, I think he’s done a great job. Excited to work with him.”
Harris appeared in 12 games for the Texans as a rookie, with 11 of those appearances as a starter. In those 12 appearances, he was all over the field, recording 74 tackles as well as an interception and forced fumble.
No, the Texans going from one of the worst defenses in the league to middle of the pack or better is not solely on Harris' shoulders. That being said, if he can make a noticeable leap in his second season, it would go a long way toward Houston's defense turning a corner.
