Texans RB Devin Singletary: Houston’s Next Dual-Threat?

Houston Texans running back Devin Singletary not only possesses an underrated ability to carry the ball on early downs, but also to be a pass-catching threat out of the backfield.
In this story:

The Houston Texans signing of running back Devin Singletary to a one-year, $3.75 million pact may run in the vein of ‘under-the-radar’ free-agent signings during the first wave of the 2023 NFL year.

In fact, the deal, to which both sides agreed on Monday, may end up being a bargain for the rebuilding Texans.

Since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round (74 overall) The 25-year-old has gained 3,151 yards on the ground on 672 carries with 16 touchdowns.

However, he has been most effective when catching the ball out of the backfield. Singletary has 145 catches for 971 yards and four scoring receptions.

Despite being overshadowed by quarterback Josh Allen and a potent Bills passing attack. Singletary enjoyed modest success last season.

In 16 games he gained 819 rush yds on 177 attempts, averaging 4.6 yards-per-carry with five rushing touchdowns. He also caught 38 passes for 280 yards with one catch in the end zone.

In doing so, he logged his second consecutive season with 1,000 scrimmage yards as one of the many weapons in Buffalo's offense.

Taking a page from the book of his predecessor Brian Daboll, Bills’ offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey opted to utilize Singletary in the backfield passing game in second/third-and-short situations.

Not only did he become a more prominent member of eclipsed his career-high of 14 first-down receptions (which he set in 2021), by logging 15 in 2022.

With his ability to force missed tackles as a receiver, the Texans will continue to utilize the Florida Atlantic product as a pass-catching weapon out of the backfield, as a strong complement to second-year running back Dameon Pierce

In short, Devin Singletary will help the Texans move the sticks in 2023.

In the process, he may provide some of the best ‘bang for the buck’ among the AFC’s free agent signings in 2023.
