'We'll Look at Everything': Texans GM Nick Caserio Focusing On All Positions Entering NFL Draft

General manager Nick Caserio isn't solely focused on upgrading the quarterback group, but the goal for the Houston Texans is to build a football team.
In this story:

HOUSTON — With Alabama's Bryce Young a near-lock for the Carolina Panthers at pick No. 1, the idea of the Houston Texans utilizing the second pick on C.J. Stroud might not be a sure thing.

And on Tuesday, general manager Nick Caserio doubled down on that sentiment, confirming that there is a possibility the Texans could avoid addressing their lackluster quarterback room.

Instead, the goal for Houston is to leave the 2023 NFL Draft with a good football team.

"I think there are a lot of different ways to go through the team," Caserio said. "We'll look at everything. I think building a team is the most important thing. How that all comes together, there is always multiple moving parts, so we'll do whatever we think is best for our team and try to make good decisions.

"Next opportunity is next Thursday night, so we'll continue the team-building process and build on some of the things we've done here in the spring."

The Texans have the capital to improve their quarterback room. The projected selection of Stroud would be an upgrade over Davis Mills, who hopes to retain his job as the team's starter under center for another season.

If they decide not to select Stroud, the Texans will have the chance to improve their quarterback corps with Hendon Hooker, Will Levis, or Anthony Richardson.

But Houston is willing to revisit free agency and the trade market if they decide to pass on a quarterback during the draft— which Caserio feels showcases the Texans' optionality.

"I think we have been consistent, taking one day at a time, looking at our options and what those entail," Caserio said. "We won't eliminate anything and just try to make good decisions. That's really the decision-making matrix and process that we're going to go through today, tomorrow, next Thursday, and Friday."

Stroud may not possess the arm strength that made Young the top-rated quarterback prospect, but the talent gap between the two respective parties is not far off. He finished his college career throwing for 8,123 yards while completing 69.3 percent of his passes for 85 touchdowns and a dozen interceptions.

Despite falling 42-41, Stroud's performance against the Georgia Bulldogs was one of the best games of his college career. He finished with 348 yards and four touchdowns while completing 23-of-34 pass attempts. Stroud also rushed for 34 yards.
