Texans Cap Space Update: Where Does Houston Stand?
Nick Caserio, DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans have made a majority of their offseason moves between free agency and the NFL Draft, most notably adding quarterback C.J. Stroud and defensive end Will Anderson in the latter.
So how much remaining salary cap space do the Texans have? According to Over The Cap, the Texans have $18,345,536 in remaining cap space, the sixth-most among all teams. Among AFC South teams, the Texans have the second-most cap space, trailing only the Indianapolis Colts but ahead of both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.
Houston went 3-13-1 in 2022, finishing dead last in a division where the winner, Jacksonville, only finished at 9-8. With a new head coach and starting quarterback, Houston should look drastically different in 2023.
Laremy Tunsil will have, by far, the largest cap hit among Texans players in 2023 at $26.57 million. He'll be followed by Tytus Howard ($13.2 million), Maliek Collins ($9.85 million) and Shaq Mason ($8.5 million).
Notably, Caserio and the Texans are slated to have $147.46 million in cap space next offseason, the most among all NFL teams. If the Texans are able to take a step forward in 2023 after adding a strong NFL Draft class, they could be an especially intriguing landing spot for free agents in a year from now.
