Houston Texans Sign DeAndre Houston-Carson to Roster as Derek Stingley Injured
For the Houston Texans, losing Derek Stingley Jr. was by no means an ideal start to their first season under coach DeMeco Ryans.
Last season, the then-rookie cornerback tallied 43 total tackles and an interception, making for a strong duo with rookie safety Jalen Pitre in the secondary. This year, both he and Pitre — who led all rookies in tackles — were primed for breakout seasons on a Houston defense that is certainly a bright spot for Ryans.
But unfortunately for Stingley Jr., his hamstring injury throws a wrench in those plans. At least for now.
"Whoever is out there, throughout the NFL, things happen," Ryans said. "For us, it's no different. We expect guys to do their best ... "Derek has done a great job for us throughout OTAs, training camp, and even for the start of the season. He has done a great job all year."
While Stingley Jr. has been ruled out for six to eight weeks, the Texans will need another cornerback to fill his shoes, which is why they signed longtime veteran DeAndre Houton-Carson to their active roster.
Houston-Carson's signing came Saturday, just a day before the Texans are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road.
Previously, Houston-Carson spent time in Chicago, with the move to the Texans marking the first of his career, and while his impact moving forward may not be as grand as Stingley Jr.'s may have been, Houston needs help and needs depth. Now, it's up to the veteran to prove he can offer some of that.
