Texans Trade for Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow Rumor: Fair NFL Draft Swap?
The Houston Texans plan for this 2023 offseason to catalyze a franchise rebirth and Oakland Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could help them in that direction.
In a recently proposed trade by Heavy Sports, the deal would send Renfrow to the Texans in exchange for their No. 73 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Heavy writes: "The Texans have another third-round pick so it would be a small price to pay to add a young difference-maker at wide receiver. For the Raiders, getting a solid third-round pick could be worth moving off of Renfrow’s contract."
Renfrow, 27, is young and talented. A 2021 Pro Bowler and proven 1,000-plus yard receiver, he has the potential to be a dynamic pass-catcher in the slot.
Coach DeMeco Ryans is dealing with a receiving unit that recorded 352 receptions in 2022 -- good for No. 14 in the league. They were also sixth-worst in the NFL a year ago with 159 receiving first downs.
While Renfrow only played in 13 games and started one due in part to a concussion sustained in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, he would be projected to help in those two departments as a short and mid-distance threat.
Renfrow is in the midst of a two-year, $32 million deal and would become Houston's fourth-highest paid player on their roster. In can be argued that management coughing up one of two third-round picks in this year's draft for a seasoned veteran gives them a better shot of winning in the short-term.
However, the Texans must ask themselves if they would want to keep Renfrow on the books beyond 2024 as he fast approaches age 30 in exchange for an even younger talent that could grow with their impending quarterback choice at No. 2.
Renfrow's name has also popped up in ties with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns - and other receiver ideas are also on the Houston agenda, especially at pick No. 12 in the form of TCU star Quentin Johnston.
