'It's Been Great!' C.J. Stroud Raves About Learning From Texans' Veteran QB's
When a team uses a first-round pick on you, the expectations are going to be high entering your rookie season. Those expectations, though, skyrocket when you're a quarterback - seen as the savior of the franchise in many cases.
For C.J. Stroud, the second overall pick by the Houston Texans, his focus during offseason workouts since being drafted is to not let any potential lofty expectations impact him.
"I'm really just trying to focus on the ball," Stroud said on Tuesday. "Everything else, I'm trying to do my best to have people figure things out for me, and of course trust people on my team."
"For right now, for me really it's just football. I'm here all day, every day and just trying to get better."
The talent is undeniably there for Stroud, as one look at his Ohio State tape shows you he can be a franchise-caliber quarterback. In his two seasons starting, he threw for 8,123 yards with 85 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions while completing 69.3 percent of his passes.
Of course, while Stroud is the presumed starter it has been made clear that the job won't be handed to him. Rather, he must beat out Davis Mills and Case Keenum. Even with the competition in camp, the rookie was not shy about how the two veterans have helped him so far.
"That guidance and that confidence that they have, because they've both played in the League and been starters," Stroud said. "They've been very helpful. We have constant communication on and off the field. It's been really great."
"They've been very methodical and want to get me to learn it step by step, just like how they would teach anybody else."
While Stroud will likely be the starter come the start of the season in the fall, he has to earn it this offseason. Learning from two experienced quarterbacks in Mills and Keenum will go a long way in helping him do just that.
