Texans Ranked High in Forbes NFL Franchise Valuations

The Houston Texans' 11 wins are the fewest in the NFL over the last three seasons, but they are the No. 12 highest-valued team in the league. Why is that?
In this story:

The Houston Texans will never catch the Dallas Cowboys as the most valuable team in Texas — no professional sports team will.

However, the Texans were valued at $5.5 billion by Forbes in August, ranking as the most valuable team in the AFC South by approximately $1.1 billion. The Texans are the No. 12 most-valuable team in the NFL — falling one spot from last year's valuation rankings due to the Miami Dolphins' league-high 24-percent spike in value — and the fifth-most valuable team in the AFC.

"Houston's revolving door of head coaches continues, as Lovie Smith was relieved of his duties after the 2022 season," Forbes wrote. "The Texans hired former linebacker DeMeco Ryans to be head coach on a six-year deal. Houston is hoping Ryans can figure out some formula for success, as he is the fourth head coach in as many years."

All the turnover and turmoil in the Texans' franchise hasn't had a detrimental effect on the team's revenue, though. In fact, it's only increased, experiencing a 17-percent spike in value since last season, which is tied with the Cincinnati Bengals for the 10th-highest climb in the league.

Houston is the only franchise which does not have any unpaid debt.

The Texans receive $3.5 billion from the NFL's revenue sharing, making up nearly two-thirds of their total valuation.

Houston's metropolitan market plays a key role in the Texans' value as well. With approximately 7.2 million people within the metro area, they help make up 15.8 percent of the organization's value.

NRG Stadium, which cost $449 million to build and has been paid off, accounts for just under 13 percent of the franchise's valuation while branding contributes to 6.4 percent of the Texans' value.

With a flurry of new faces like C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr. taking the field for Houston, patrons will be in seats and jerseys will be sold, likely helping raise those two percentages of the team's value in the upcoming fiscal year.
