Texans Want to Draft a QB? Good News in 'Starting-Level Grades'
The Houston Texans have 11 selections in the 2023 NFL Draft, including the second-overall pick. The rebuilding Texans have needs to fill all over their roster, including finding a "face of the franchise'' and hopeful generational talent at quarterback.
Which position group is strongest this year? Of course, the quarterbacks are garnering the most attention as a strong group with varying skills and size.
Whoever the Carolina Panthers with their No. 1 overall selection will send waves through the rest of the draft, in particular for Houston. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud is the favorite to be the first player picked, with Bryce Young right behind him. With many teams hungry for a quarterback, the expectation is the first round will be highlighted with many quarterback selections.
The good news for Houston is their need for quarterback comes at a fortunate time. NFL.com ranked the quarterback position as the fifth-best position group as a whole. The reasoning?
I have five quarterbacks carrying starter-level grades this year (Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Hendon Hooker). Three passers could come off the board very early and four could go inside the top 10 or so picks. However, there's not great depth in this class, which could lead some QB-needy teams to wait until next year to address the position.
The considerations for NFL.com's rankings: star-caliber players, future starters and overall depth. The list is concentrated on prospects who are most likely to be drafted in the first five rounds. Here are the best two position groups:
1. Cornerback: I expect Christian Gonzalez and Devon Witherspoon to be the first two players drafted at the position, but we should see five, maybe even six, taken in the first round.
2. Tight end: This is one of the most promising tight end classes I've seen in a while. Michael Mayer, Luke Musgrave, Dalton Kincaid and Darnell Washington are the most well-known prospects and each is worthy of going inside the first 40 picks.
What about the worst? Linebacker is the weakest position group on the list because of its lack of depth and prospects who project as special-teamers.
All in all, with Houston holding picks Nos. 2 and 12, a QB from a solid class is coming to town. The Texans just need to pick the right one.
