Point Spread: Titans Underdogs For 8th Time in 9 Games Sunday at Buccaneers
TAMPA, Fla. — There were a lot of unknowns in trying to predict what kind of season the Tennessee Titans would have, and part of that had to do with the schedule, which featured a lot of projected close games.
In every game but one all season, the point spread in Titans' games has been right around a field goal. And it's no different this Sunday, when they are 2.5-point underdogs in Tampa when they take on the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. The game starts at Noon CT, and is televised on CBS.
Most of the early money has been on the Buccaneers so far. The opening line was just minus-1 on some sites, and minus-1.5 on others.
It's also the eighth time in nine games that the Titans are the underdog. They've overachieved, however, winning three games outright and covering in another to post a 4-4 record against the spread this season. All three of those wins came at home, though, and this trip to Tampa is the second of three straight road games for Tennessee.
The over/under is 38.5, according to the FanDuel gambling website. Both teams have gone under the total in six of their eight games so far.
Here's what the Titans have done against the point spread this season:
Titans vs. the number in 2023
- WEEK 1: Lost at New Orleans Saints 16-15 as a 3-point underdog. The total (31) went far under the 41.5-point line. Record: 0-1. Against the spread: 1-0. Under Total Record: 1-0.
- WEEK 2: Won at home against the Los Angeles Chargers 27-24 in overtime as a 2.5-point underdog. The total (51) went over the 45.5-point line. Record: 1-1. Against the spread: 2-0. Under Total Record: 1-1.
- WEEK 3: Lost at Cleveland Browns 27-3 as a 3.5-point underdog. The total (30) went far under the 38.5-point line. Record: 1-2. Against the spread: 2-1. Under Total Record: 2-1.
- WEEK 4: Won at home against the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3 as a 2.5-point underdog. The total (30) went under the 40.5-point line. Record: 2-2. Against the spread: 3-1. Under Total Record: 3-1.
- WEEK 5: Lost at Indianapolis Colts 23-16 as a 2.5-point favorite. The total (39) went under the 43.5-point line. Record: 2-3. Against the spread: 3-2. Under Total Record: 4-1.
- WEEK 6: Lost in London to the Baltimore Ravens 24-16 as a 4.5-point underdog. The total (40) went under the 44.5-point line. Record: 2-4. Against the spread: 3-3. Under Total Record: 5-1.
- WEEK 7: Bye.
- WEEK 8: Won at home against the Atlanta Falcons 28-23 as a 2.5-point underdog. The total (51) went far over the 35.5-point line, which was the lowest of the year, by far. Record: 3-4. Against the spread: 4-3. Under Total Record: 5-2.
- WEEK 9: Lost at Pittsburgh Steelers 20-16 as a 2.5-point underdog. The total (36) went just under the 36.5-point line. Record: 3-5. Against the spread: 4-4. Under Total Record: 6-2.
The common thread, of course, is that the Titans have been much better at home in Nashville. They are 3-0 there, winning all three games as that 2.5-point underdog that they are again on Sunday in Tampa.
But they are 0-5 away from home — the loss to Baltimore in London was technically a home game — and that needs to change. It looked like they were going to pull out a win a week ago Thursday at Pittsburgh, but the Steelers went on a 92-yard drive and scored the game-winning touchdown with 4::02 to go.
The Buccaneers and Titans have a lot in common. Both are 3-5 and have looked good at times, but have also struggled often. The biggest difference was that the Bucs got off to a hot start, going 3-1 before losing four straight games.
They've also been susceptible at home, losing at Raymond James Stadium to the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons. Their only home win has come against the Chicago Bears, one of worst teams in the NFL this season.
