All Cardinals Reporting Hopkins Could Be Released
NASHVILLE - A Monday report from Donnie Druin of our Sports Illustrated/Fan Nation All Cardinals site indicated that some believe the Arizona Cardinals could release a veteran receiver, and the subject of a months-long trade rumor, if the team is unable to find a trade partner for the wideout.
The report indicates that the trade market has cooled and that most believe the Cardinals have too high a price tag on Hopkins.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer went on the Greg Bedard Podcast and offered the following:
“Some teams think that Cardinals are going to cut him, they think the Cardinals will wind up cutting him.” Breer said (h/t Bro Bible), “His market is not great right now. There’s nobody who was willing to take on Hopkins’ contract and pay the Cardinals initial asking price.”
In a separate article here on All Titans on Monday, I wrote that the price for Hopkins, based on his current contract, and what it would cost in the end to trade for him was still "too steep" for the Titans.
At this point, those feelings haven't changed, as his $19.25 million cap hit for the 2023 season is above what the Titans can afford at the moment.
The Titans are also rumored to have been exploring their options in a trade up from No.11 to No.3 three in this month's NFL Draft, a move that would mean a trade with the Cardinals.
Could the Titans build a package to make the move up the draft board that would include Hopkins?
While fans have suggested such a move on social media, there have been no credible reports of this, and none of the sources All Titans have spoken with have heard of any conversations about such a trade.
It is doubtful that Arizona, even with new general manager Monti Ossenfort, who joined the Cardinals from the Titans front office, would be willing to move Hopkins and their No.3 pick in one transaction without a hefty package in return.
Should Hopkins be released, the Titans would likely be one of the team's to pursue him actively, depending on the deal he seeks.
