Malik Willis Gets Revenge With Deep Touchdown Pass After Throwing Interception
NASHVILLE — The pressure on Malik Willis went up to a ten when the team decided to draft rookie quarterback Will Levis, but Willis has responded well to that adversity so far this summer. He showed that resilience again at Saturday's practice when he throw a long touchdown pass immediately after throwing a pick.
Willis has been running with the second-team offense through the first week of training camp and has had some good and bad moments, but the best sequence from Titans' practice included both.
On a play during full-team drills, edge rusher Rashad Weaver faked a rush and the dropped back into coverage. Willis was looking to hit tight end Alize Mack over the middle, but threw it right to where Hooker was dropping. A tough play for Willis, but again, he responded in a big way.
On the very next play, Willis dropped back and fired a rope to wide receiver Chris Moore on a post route. Moore caught the pass and scored on what would have been a 75-yard touchdown strike. The play electrified the on-looking crowd.
Willis had a tough transition from college to the pros in his rookie season, but he has looked more relaxed and comfortable with what he is being asked to do. It will be a tough challenge for Willis to hold off Levis though after the team invested so much in moving up to draft Levis.
However, Willis has held Levis off so far and it may be early, but that is at least a good sign. The preseason games will tell us the most about how the backup quarterback competition ends, but from what we have seen from Willis so far, he will be able to bounce back from whatever lies ahead.
The sequence from Willis today also demonstrates what makes him so interesting. There may be some bad plays, but there are some incredibly explosives ones in there as well.
