Tennessee Titans Doing Free Agency On a Budget So Far
NASHVILLE — When you look at the salary cap figures for the six newest Tennessee Titans, it might surprise some how much the team has purchased in free agency and at what little total cost those purchases have cost the team.
While every contract is different regarding monies and potential escalator clauses, the bottom line is the total of all the team's deals related to the salary cap.
Regarding the six new signees, pass rusher Adren Key has the most prominent cap number for 2023, at $2.88 million. Tackle Andre Dillard weighs in at No. 2 with $2.56 million for next season, and Azeez Al-Shaair, with a deal worth $2.24 million, are the top three in salary.
Utility offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill's deal is for $1.99 million. At the same time, corner Sean Murphy-Bunting, and special teams ace/linebacker Luke Gifford is set to receive $1.89 million and $1.74 million, respectively, next season.
That's a total of just $13.3 million spent on those six individuals.
While some of these signings have been panned by critics, others have been hailed as good deals for a team working under some serious salary cap constraints.
Yes, there is still much more work to be done for the Titans front office, both in clearing more cap space and in working the potential deals needed to clear that space. However, general manager Ran Carthon has shown that he is capable — and willing — to work within a lower-range budget when necessary while looking forward to the 2024 campaign when his franchise will be flush with cash to spend.
At the risk of redundancy, the moves now facing Carthon and his staff seem daunting, as they involve decisions on some of the roster's best and most popular players.
No one envies them having to make these decisions, but they will likely be made soon and will sting.
