Titans Offensive Line Forcing Themselves to To Communicate On, And Off Field

An NFL offensive line is different than any other position group in the team in that communication is a key to success.

NASHVILLE - When it comes to communication, the offensive line of a football team must be able to communicate their assignments and who and where they need to be on every football snap.

So for Tennessee Titans first-year offensive line coach Jason (Hoss) Houghtaling, it's imperative that the 2023 line, with three new starters and two returning players, learns to communicate effectively and quickly.

Aaron Brewer is one of those returning starters, though he is moving from left guard to center. Nicholas Petite-Frere returns at right tackle; in contrast, veteran free agent additions Andre. Dillard and Daniel Brunskill join rookie first-round pick Peter Skoronski as the top five linemen for the Titans in their organized team activities.

Houghtaling shared his thoughts on where this unit is at this point in the learning process of growing together.

"The offensive line is obviously a little bit different position, so the guys are working together, coming together, communicating all the time, getting to know each other on and off the field, said Houghtaling. "I think they're doing a good job of that, you know, forcing themselves to talk all the time."

"We talk about it in the room, and we tell them, and I know they go to dinners together, and they spend some time together off the field, so that's all part of being an offensive line," Houghtaling said. "It's one unit working together all the time, so it's a little bit different than some other positions."

While there is still time left for this unit to continue to progress and grow, they still must continue to improve this part of their collective games between now and the opening of training camp when the tone and tenor of the process changes from the installation of the offense to the need to execute what they have learned in preparation for live action as opposed to unpadded practices.

Just how quickly this group can come together will play a prominent role in the success or failure of this team in the coming season.
