Titans Rookie Peter Skoronski Has 'Been Awesome,' According to OL Coach Jason Houghtaling
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are entering their second week of training camp and we have heard about a lot of the players who are standing out, but one name we haven't heard a lot about is first-round pick Peter Skoronski.
Some of that may have to do with the offensive lines struggles early, but according to Titans offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling, Skoronski has been doing just fine.
"Peter (Skoronski) has done a great job as far as just continuing to come out and work everyday. Getting better," Houghtaling said. "I've heard this a bunch from other lines and stuff and people throughout football — iron sharpens iron. Him going against Jeff (Simmons) everyday and battling with him, continue to work different techniques. Again, face, feet and hands. Where they're going, when you're throwing them stuff like that, it's been awesome. To see him continue to grind and work has been really a good thing."
Not many defensive linemen in the NFL that would be a tougher challenge for a rookie than Jeffery Simmons, so Skoronski is being baptized by fire in a sense. Skoronski won't see a player line up across from him with Simmons' talent most Sundays. The practice against a two-time All-Pro should be the best thing for Skoronski.
What also is best for Skoronski is staying at guard. With the Titans' issues at right tackle, there has been questions about whether the Titans would considered moving the rookie to tackle. Skoronski played all his snaps in college at left tackle, so a transition to the right side may not be as easy as some expect.
With that in mind, Houghtaling also talked about the possibility of moving Skoronski.
"Right now, I think Vrabs (Mike Vrabel) said it in a press conference, he's comfortable there at right(left) guard, but there is certainly versatility to do other things. Right now, he's hanging there at left guard and just continuing to work."
Even if Skoronski doesn't move to right tackle, he can be a huge piece of righting the ship on the offensive line after the disaster we saw from that group in 2022. In what has been a breaking of a recent trend, it appears a Titans first rounder may be on his way to a great rookie season.
