NASHVILLE— Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik exhibited coaching prowess during Saturday's 45-17 win against the Cleveland Browns in a wild-card playoff game.

The Texans' impressive offensive performance against the highly regarded Browns' defense illustrates why at least four teams, including the Tennessee Titans, requested to interview him for their coaching vacancies.

Slowik displayed his play-calling prowess against the Browns by utilizing rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud's skills as both a runner and a deft passer capable of making any throw. Stroud was 16 of 21 on pass attempts for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

"When he call, we ball. He knew to mix it up a little bit," Stroud told reporters after Saturday's win. "We wanted to throw the ball early just to set the tone that we would not shy away from anything." When you have an OC that's going to be aggressive and take care of the football, really that's a recipe for success."

Notably, the Texans have significantly improved their performance this season. From only winning three games last season, they have managed to clinch the AFC South. This success is mainly attributed to the efforts of Stroud and the rookie head coach, DeMeco Ryans. However, it is essential to recognize the significant contributions made by Slowik, the team's offensive coordinator, in his first season.

Slowik became the Texans offensive coordinator in 2023 after spending six seasons with the 49ers, most recently serving as the offensive passing game coordinator. Slowik started with the 49ers during the same season as Ryans, with both coaches serving as defensive quality control coaches.

Slowik performed various roles during his six seasons from 2017 to 2022 on Kyle Shanahan's staff for the 49ers. His positions included passing game coordinator, passing game specialist, offensive assistant, and defensive quality control coach.

Slowik's work with Stroud could be a positive sign of his ability to mentor young quarterbacks. Stroud is the overwhelming favorite for the NFL Offensive Rookie Of The Year and is a longshot MVP candidate with 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns to five interceptions as a rookie.

Stroud's three touchdown passes helped the Texans put 31 points on offense against the Browns. Stroud said that Slowik's calls made the game easier for him.

If Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk watched the game, she likely saw on TV what general manager Ran Carthon observed in Slowik when both were working for the San Francisco 49ers.

"Bobby did a great job, our O-line, our tight ends, running backs, our receivers, our defense, scoring points," Stroud told reporters. "We talk about that all the time. It's really cool to see it come to fruition."
