Titans Cornerbacks Ranked in Bottom Half of NFL by ESPN's Mike Clay
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans' defense will have a heavy burden to carry in the 2023 based on the state of the Titans' offense. That means a young Titans' secondary will have to stay healthy and perform better than it did in 2022. Despite youth and injury concerns, the Titans cornerbacks ranked 20th in a recent list from ESPN's Mike Clay.
It is hard to argue with the ranking considering all the factors surrounding the Titans' corners. Each corner in the room has their own drawbacks and hurdles to clear for them to be the player they all hoped to be. Some hurdles are bigger than other, of course.
Kristian Fulton is going into a contract year. He was called out by head coach Mike Vrabel for injury management at the end of the 2022 season and has missed 20 games in his career. When healthy, Fulton has shown flashes of great play, but has been too inconsistent with availability and performance. This is a big year for the future of his career.
Roger McCreary had a solid rookie seasons and appeared in all 17 games. However, the pre-draft knock on him came to life in a major way in 2022. His short arms limits his ability to play on the outside. McCreary was beat regularly by bigger, longer receivers on the sideline. Can he transition into the slot, which is a more appropriate role long term?
Caleb Farley torn an ACL in his rookie season and had his second season cut short due to a back injury. Farley had injury concerns coming out of college and it is starting to look like they may be too much to overcome. Maybe Farley stays healthy and changes the course of his career.
Elijah Molden had a nice rookie year as a physical slot corner on early downs. He could blitz and help in run defense. Yes, Molden struggled in man coverage and when the Titans' defense was at it's best, Molden would come off the field on passing downs. That doesn't change the fact he can still thrive in that early-down role. Unfortunately, Molden missed 15 games with multiple groin issues. Can he bounce back to his rookie form?
Sean Murphy-Bunting is the wild card of the group. Coming off a rookie contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Murphy-Bunting is looking to cash in on a one-year prove it deal with the Titans. Can he grab a starting role and play well enough to get a better contract next offseason?
The group comes with a ton of questions, but still have the talent to justify the ranking we see them get from Clay. The answers to some of those questions will come soon enough.
