Titans HC Mike Vrabel Faces Toughest Challenge in 2023
NASHVILLE — Going back to when he was hired prior to the 2018 season, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has been able to maximize the roster he was given. The reality is this 2023 roster is the worst Vrabel has ever had while at the helm. Can Vrabel bring the best out of it too?
Mike Vrabel is a good football coach. There is no way to dispute that. He changed quarterbacks mid-season in 2019 and led the team to an AFC Championship game appearance, led the Titans to a division championship and home playoff game in 2020 then followed that up by getting the number one seed in the AFC in 2021 despite setting a record with 91 players on the roster throughout the year due to injuries.
Vrabel won NFL coach of the year in 2021, but 2022 saw him miss the playoffs for the first time since his rookie coaching season in 2018. A lot of it had to do with injuries, but another factor people aren't bringing up enough is talent. Yes, the Titans had a 7-3 record at one point during the year, but the schedule was very easy at the start of 2022 and may have skewed the public view of how talented the team was.
Regardless of that debate, the Titans' roster in 2023 is worse. They have less at receiver and less at offensive line. No, not compared to the diminished and injury plagued version of the Titans at the end of the year, but the version that carved out that 7-3 start. With less talent than he has ever had, will Vrabel be able to pull the magic he did in 2021 or 2019?
We will get our answer in the fall, but a lot of the optimism around the Titans has to do with Vrabel's ability. So, this will be a season where we really see how much value Vrabel brings to the table.
