Titans Players Talk Brand New Offense Under OC Tim Kelly
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans' offseason has moved so fast it feels everyone has forgotten the changes made to the coaching staff earlier this year. The Titans revamped the coaches using demotions, promotions and hires to overhaul the group. The biggest change of them all was the promotion of Tim Kelly to offensive coordinator and with that comes the question of how much will the offense actually be changing.
According to a few of the Titans players at least, big changes are in store. Ryan Tannehill, Aaron Brewer and Chig Okonkwo all spoke about the changes they are witnessing and it gives us a glimpse into what Tim Kelly is trying to do. Tannehill spoke at length about the changes he is seeing and how he is working through it.
"We have a bunch of guys who have been around and doing a good job for us in preparation. Learning a new system, being in a new offense, new concepts, all that type of stuff." Tannehill continued talking about the differences in offense, "Big difference. New terminology, new concepts. Huge changes, but a fresh line of thinking on things."
I think it is really important to point out some of the words Tannehill used there. New system, new offense, new concepts, new terminology. it would be fair to wonder just how much the offense would change after Vrabel promoted from within, but based on what Tannehill is saying, it is actually an entire new offense, not just a modified version of the previous one. Tannehill continued to explain when asked about how he is using his time.
"Using time to learn the offense, get accustomed to new terminology, new terms, new routes. Fresh mind, new ideas, new concepts, different ways to attack the defense than we've had around here the last few years." Tannehill talked about what the changes could mean, "pressure on defenses, might be tempo, might be personnel changes. Different sets in personnel than defenses are typically seeing."
It wasn't only Tannehill though. Offensive lineman Aaron Brewer talked about the tempo as well.
"Getting more up tempo. We're still working through all the details and the bumps. It's smooth, early in the process, but we are getting there. Operation is faster, in and out of the huddle."
The Titans clearly want to play with more tempo from an operatinal standpoint, but tight end Chig Okonkwo also discussed the tempo increase during the plays as well and how the Titans want to attack.
"I would just say, I see a lot of speed is involved. A lot of speed. A lot of plays where we are trying to go really fast and just take what we can before the defense can get there. Try to outflank guys."
It makes sense the Titans would try to fool defenses rather than just beat them head on. The Titans don't have the talent to just line up and beat the opposing team. They will have to be clever and outsmart their opponent to win with significantly less talent. Looks like Tim Kelly is on his way to installing a system that can do just that.
