Titans Ranked 8th Worst Roster in NFL According to Pro Football Focus
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are seeing a significant change happen right before their eyes this offseason. High-profile members of the previous core like Taylor Lewan or Bud Dupree were let go and the team started a transition to a younger set of players. With that comes some imbalance on the roster and that is something that led Pro Football Focus to rank the Titans as the 8th-worst roster in the NFL.
Even with the ranking though, PFF has the Titans going over their 7.5 Over/Under total. Here is what the authors of the rankings, Dalton Wasserman and Jim Wyman, had to say.
"Despite all the holes on the offensive side of the ball, head coach Mike Vrabel has done more with less than what the Titans are projected to have in 2023. Given that the AFC South is one of the weaker divisions, Tennessee should still expect to be competitive."
The Titans are trying to walk a line this season with the roster. They want to try and compete to win as many games as possible. Which they should be doing if they have Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry and Kevin Byard on the roster. All are aging veterans on expensive contracts that only make sense if you are a team trying to maximize winning.
The awkwardness comes in when you look at their other moves. The Titans made no significant free agents signings this year, opting for low-risk lotto tickets on former non-starters in Andre Dillard, Arden Key and Azeez Al-Shaair. Adding to that, the Titans used two valuable picks on day two of the 2023 NFL draft to add players at the same position as two of the three highest paid players on the team in Tannehill and Henry.
Trying to serve two masters, winning and youth, makes it difficult to put together a roster that checks both boxes. Clearly, the Titans have bee affecting by trying to do both. Whether they can overcome that and win games remains to be seen, but what we know now is the Titans will be fighting an uphill battle.
