Titans Schedule Presents Significant Rest Advantage in 2023
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans past two seasons have been hindered by significant injuries. In 2021, the Titans saw an NFL-Record 91 players see their roster as injuries created constant turnover. In 2022, the Titans placed the most players, 34, in the NFL on injured reserve throughout the season. The Titans are hoping that won't be the case in 2023 and new data collected by Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis should give them optimism the can buck the vicious trend.
The first thing we need to do here is understand what exactly "Net Rest Edge" is. To put it simply, it is the amount of days of extra rest you have over your opponent when you play them. Let's say the Titans played the Texans in a Sunday matchup. The Titans previous game was also on Sunday, but the Texans just came off Monday Night Football. The Titans would have a +1 day rest advantage.
Your "Net Rest Edge" is what your total is at the end of the season. Per Sharp, the Titans have one of the best rest edges in the entire NFL at +11. This should be music to the Titans' ears. Not only does this, in theory, help the team be more refreshed and, in turn, less injured, but it also manifests in a better ability to win games.
After the last two seasons and the historic rate of injuries we have seen, that has to be a breath of fresh air. The other side of this though is, what if the Titans' injury concerns continue? How will they be able to answer away three straight years of league-leading injuries? Certainly, they won't. Hopefully, we don't need those answers.
