Hopefully a Lesson Learned For Jordan Addison, Who is Unlikely to Face Suspension
Vikings rookie wide receiver Jordan Addison made a mistake early Thursday morning that was dumb but ultimately harmless. The 21-year-old recent first-round pick was driving his Lamborghini 140 miles per hour in a 55 MPH zone in St. Paul just after 3 a.m. when he was pulled over by a Minnesota State Patrol trooper and cited for speeding and reckless driving.
Driving that fast is extremely dangerous — even if the roads are mostly empty — and never worth it. It's stupid, it's reckless, and it's careless. Hopefully, it's a lesson learned for Addison and a mistake that he'll never repeat. He'll face a hefty fine and a possible license suspension, as well as serious conversations with Vikings officials and other people in his life.
It doesn't have to be made out as anything more than that. Addison is unlikely to be suspended via the NFL's personal conduct policy or internal Vikings discipline (though it's not completely out of the question). There is plenty of precedent that exists when it comes to NFL players getting ticketed for speeding and not facing a suspension from football.
Fans making comparisons to Henry Ruggs III isn't surprising, but that was a very different situation. Ruggs had a BAC twice the legal limit when he drove up to 156 MPH during an accident that led to the death of a woman and her dog in November 2021. There has been no indication that any alcohol was involved in Addison's situation.
Obviously, Addison's rookie year isn't off to the smoothest start. He missed all of OTAs and mandatory minicamp with an undisclosed injury and has now made national headlines in the wrong way. Still, he can turn things around quickly by producing on the field and staying out of trouble.
Hopefully this is a lesson learned and nothing more.
Vikings rookies report to training camp at TCO Performance Center on Sunday. Unless we hear otherwise soon, Addison is expected to be healthy and available.
