USMNT’s Christian Pulisic Injured After World Cup Goal vs. Iran (Video)

The American captain received medical treatment after scoring the team’s first goal of the game.

Christian Pulisic scored the United States men’s national team’s only goal during Tuesday’s men’s World Cup match vs. Iran, only to suffer an injury in the process.

Pulisic ran onto a headed cross from Sergiño Dest and tapped it home, but he ended up crashing into Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand in the net. The American didn’t get up for a few moments as he writhed in apparent pain. He received treatment in the goal and then continued to be evaluated on the sidelines.

The American star left the game for a few minutes but returned for the end of the first half. U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter then elected to replace Pulisic with Brenden Aaronson to open the second half.

Here’s a closer look at what happened while Pulisic scored the goal in the 38th minute, which put the U.S. up 1–0 over Iran.

While he came back into the game during the 43rd minute, he was unable to continue after halftime.

Pulisic then was replaced in the lineup by Aaronson for the second half. Fox reporter Jenny Taft later reported on the television broadcast that Pulisic suffered an abdominal injury. Fox Sports reported in its postgame coverage that Pulisic was taken to a hospital for treatment of the injury.

The U.S. held on to defeat Iran, 1-0, to advance to the Round of 16.
