VIDEO: How Sunderland constructed impressive win at Blackburn
The two youngest sides in the Championship met at Ewood Park on Wednesday night in a blistering battle of pace and stamina.
The bookies were with Blackburn, but they had proved less incisive than us in front of goal, so there was everything to be hopeful for.
What transpired was a thrilling affair. Blackburn tore through Sunderland for a full twenty minutes. Seemingly carving up the Black Cats defence at will, but the could not overcome the final redoubt manned by Dan Ballard.
As bodies flew desperately in front of shots Sunderland somehow kept the ball out and gradually found space to ease themselves into the game.
Jack Clarke got a visit from karma after last years’ penalty denial as tonight he won a soft one against the run of play. He kept his calm and sent Aynsley Pears in the Blackburn goal the wrong way for Sunderland to take the lead.
Although Blackburn equalised, it was Sunderland who finished a breathless first half the stronger as Dan Neil took control of a loose ball on the edge of the box let rip with a shot that into the corner of the net. To give Sunderland a 2-1 lead at the break.
The second half saw Blackburn’s furious starting pace catch up with them as Sunderland increasingly dominated the game. Jack Clarke commanded the pitch seemingly at will and walked the ball into the net in front of the travelling support. As they chanted his name, he returned the love with kisses to the crowd.
So if you missed the transmission of the game and want to feel the atmosphere then take control and watch ‘Raid on the Ribble Valley’ below to see just how Clarke tore Blackburn apart time and time again.
