'We played really well' - Niall Huggins assesses Sunderland's defeat vs Cardiff City

Sunderland lost 1-0 at home to Cardiff City in the Championship yesterday.
Sunderland impressive run in the Championship came to an unexpected end yesterday, with Cardiff City nicking a late win at the Stadium of Light.
Tony Mowbray's side were unbeaten in five before yesterday, with four wins form those five; despite the defeat, Sunderland remain in 5th place of the Championship table.
And yesterday's game also saw Niall Huggins start. The former Leeds United man has started the last three now, filling in at left-back.
After the game, Huggins gave his verdict on the defeat, and is quoted as saying:
“I thought we played really well in the first half, we had a lot of opportunities. As the second half went on we kept making good opportunities but we just couldn’t seem to find the one to find the back of the net.
"Obviously they get one chance from a set piece which is just a lapse in concentration and then the result ends up like that, so it’s unfortunate. We played well but obviously it’s not the result we wanted.”
Huggins, 22, initially joined Sunderland in 2021. Since then though, the Welshman has made just 14 total appearances for Sunderland with numerous injuries having kept him from progressing.
But he seems to have found fitness now and Mowbray is showing faith in him.
Huggins remains a very young player with bags of potential and a good run in the side could show fans why the club signed him two seasons ago.
Up next for the Black Cats is a trip to bottom club Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.
The Owls are without a win all season after losing 4-0 at Swansea City on Saturday; Friday's game kicks off at 8pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
