Lynden Gooch could make his return to action v Rotherham United this weekend.

Sunderland welcome Rotherham United to the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

For Tony Mowbray's side, it's already become a hugely important game after suffering three defeats form three this season, with back-to-back 2-1 defeats in the league at the hands of Ipswich Town and then Preston North End.

And Mowbray could be boosted by the potential return of Gooch.

The 27-year-old has missed the last two but as per Sunderland Echo reporter Phil Smith, the right wing-back has been in training this week and could make his return to action on Saturday.

The four-cap USA international has been with Sunderland since 2012. He's closing in on his 250th appearance for the club having been on Wearside through thick and thin - he's played for the club in the Premier League, the Championship, and League One.

A timely return...

Gooch has certainly had his critics in the past. But he's a player who knows the club inside and out, and he knows what it takes to play for the club, so having him back in action can only be a boost for Mowbray.

And playing in a team with so much youth, Gooch's experience could shine through and at a time when the club needs a win.

Rotherham will definitely make it difficult for Sunderland this weekend, but it's a winnable game for the Black Cats who are yet to put points on the board this season.

Whether Gooch features from the off remains to be seen, if not unlikely. But it looks like he could make the bench and his presence itself would be a boost for the club.

Kick off is at 3pm on Saturday.
