Luke O'Nien sets out Premier League ambition after penning Sunderland extension
Luke O'Nien has recently signed a new contract at Sunderland, and next he wants to deliver the Black Cats back to the Premier League.
O'Nien, 28, recently penned a new three-year deal at Sunderland, with the club having the option to extend his stay by a further year.
It's a symbol of how important the versatile player become for Sunderland. O'Nien has now been with the Black Cats since 2018 and has made 224 total appearances, with many more to come.
And O'Nien could yet represent Sunderland in the Premier League. Speaking to Chronicle Live about his next ambitions with the club after signing his contract extension, O'Nien said:
"Premier League has always been the ambition since I joined the club. It took us a little bit longer to get back to the Championship - longer than I would have liked - but we got there, and there are little markers to show how far we have come and we have to keep on putting those little markers down, keep developing and growing as a team. If we keep hitting each marker, I think the Premier League will be very close to us."
Sunderland were last in the Premier League in the 2016/17 season. They were relegated that year and then relegated to League One in the following campaign, where they'd eventually spend the next four seasons.
But things are certainly on the up at Sunderland. They're making waves in the transfer market and whilst matters on the pitch have slowed down a bit this season, there's still a very obvious air of positivity surrounding the club.
Whether or not O'Nien will ever represent the club in the Premier League remains to be seen, but he could certainly play a huge part in helping the club get closer to achieving that goal.
