Saskatchewan Roughriders Sign 5 Players For 2024 Season

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed five young players they hope can help them turn the corner next season.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed five players on Tuesday as they continued to build their roster for the 2024 season.

The National signings included offensive linemen Zack Fry and Evan Floren, fullback Morgen Runge, and linebackers Matt Dean and Nick Thomas.

Fry and Floren could be future building blocks on the offensive line. Fry (6-6, 304) was a second-round pick last spring and dressed out for four games. Before that, he joined the Roughriders in training camp in 2022 before returning to Western for his fourth college season. With Western, he helped the Mustangs win the 2021 Vanier Cup.

Floren (6-4, 300) did not play for the Roughriders after he was drafted in the seventh round out of Queen’s University. Once Floren went through training camp, he returned to Queen’s to play a fifth collegiate season, where he was an OUA first-team All-Star for the second straight season.

Runge (6-1, 216) is out of eligibility after playing his fifth season of college football at Alberta. Before that, he played four seasons with the Edmonton Huskies of the CJFL. The Roughriders had him in training camp last spring.

Dean (6-2, 220) was the Roughriders’ third-round pick in 2023, and he played in four games, making one tackle. He was a productive four-year player at York University, with 115 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, and two interceptions in his career.

Thomas was another player the Roughriders selected in the seventh round in 2023, but he also returned to school after training camp. Thomas went back to Manitoba and finished off a five-year career where he was a U SPORTS and Canada West All-Star.
