Fans Likely Sky High Over Schedule, Coaches Just Sigh, Move On

Some big names on Hogs' list for fans, but it will be another one that ranks high

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — We won't know until 2024 how much the Arkansas coaches will like the schedule, but fans are already figuring out how to land a ticket to specific games. The SEC released the list of opponents for the first year Texas and Oklahoma join the league Wednesday evening and overflowing crowds are already predicted.

Even some of the media folks are getting hyped up for the whole thing. There are some big names on that home schedule for an eight-game schedule with no divisions, and once you really look at it, the Razorbacks simply have Texas replacing Alabama in terms of familiar faces. Even Pig Trail Nation's Mike Irwin was looking ahead.

There are a couple of positive things to note about that schedule: 1. Alabama isn't on it and 2. It's the last year of giving up a conference home date every other year against Texas A&M for a game in AT&T Stadium that does next to nothing for recruiting, according to what coaches say. They can't do much more than nod in the general direction of one in the stands. That is if a potential recruit can get a ticket and find a way to get to the game.

We won't know until 2024 if any of those teams will be good or not. The transfer portal has kinda altered the way we can look very far down the road and start making projections because everything can change in a year. Just look at the Hogs with all the changes they've had from players coming and going from last year's team.

The names will still be big. LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee are in there along with the Longhorns in what fans are hoping is a repeat of what happened back in September 2021. The reality is that is not something anyone should place a futures bet on right now. It can go anywhere by then – both ways.

While the public relations gaggle with the Hogs is likely already making plans, Sam Pittman probably is shaking his head at what he can see is going to be every single year going forward because, with the exception of an opener against UAPB in Little Rock, the rest are going to depend on who's got what by then. Oklahoma State, Alabama-Birmingham and Louisiana Tech are all games that could be challenging by 2024.

Fans will need to see what effect playing in the SEC has on recruiting before anyone can determine whether Texas still playing at the level we've seen in Austin for the last few years. Every week will be an attention-getter and that "culture" thing some folks keep throwing out there can flip quickly. Talent isn't the issue.

There's still a 2023 season to play for the Hogs, so there won't be a whole lot of looking forward by the coaches. They clearly have a big enough challenge putting all these new pieces together with more questions than answers right now.
