Arkansas Not Team They Have Been Under Musselman
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Razorbacks struggled to an 83-52 loss on Saturday against Auburn. Arkansas’ 32-point loss was their largest at Bud Walton Arena. The Tigers came into Fayetteville and were able to snatch the momentum with a seven point halftime lead before it ballooned to a 23 points with 6:50 to go in the second half.
Auburn’s lead ballooned to 40 points as Arkansas struggled to reach 50 points by the end of regulation. Shooting 58% from the field in the second half, the Tigers were able to extend their win streak to seven games.
Arkansas struggled to shoot the ball making just 31% of their field goal attempts. Keyon Menifield seemed to be the only guard with effort while on the floor. He led the Razorbacks with 14 points, connecting on 4-of-9 three point attempts.
Hogs Crushed in SEC Opener, Lack Offensive Rhythm
Turnovers On Repeat
The Razorbacks' major problem was carelessness with the basketball as they surrendered 13 turnovers on the day. Bad passes
Going into the day, the Hogs have struggled at stopping dribble drives. Collectively, Arkansas allowed Auburn to drive open lanes to the basket on numerous layups and baseline dunks. The Tigers were able to get whatever they wanted in the second half converting 14-of-25 attempts from inside the arc, scoring 48 points in the paint for the game.
Free Throws Optional
The Razorbacks also treated free throw shooting as an elective. Following a game where Arkansas went to the charity stripe 30 times, it shot 15 free throws making eight of those.
Lapses In Discipline
An absence of discipline was apparent as Arkansas continues to struggle with fouls of the technical kind. The Razorbacks have given opponents many chances for extra points, today was no exception as the Hogs were called for five technical fouls. Even its rebounding effort was lackadaisical. There was no willingness to block out or desire to crash the boards as the Razorbacks were outrebounded 46-32.
Arkansas will have plenty of questions to answer as they prepare for Georgia on Wednesday evening. The results haven’t been there for a Razorback team considered the second best team in the league preseason.
“We’re pretty disappointed in 1 through 14 tonight,” Musselman said. “This team has not resembled what we have built the last four years.”
