Johni Broome: 'I feel like my teammates are not appreciated how they should be'
Johni Broome was a big pickup for Auburn in the transfer portal last off-season.
Broome averaged 14.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.4 blocks per game last season. Additionally, he shot 52.7 percent from the field.
Broome was named to the Preseason All-SEC First Team, a recognition that the Plant City, Fla. native does not take lightly.
“It’s exciting to be acknowledged as one of the top players in the league, but you can’t really look too much into it," Broome said. "I feel like my teammates are not appreciated how they should be, but that’s why it’s preseason rankings.”
Auburn is set to begin the 2023-24 campaign against the No. 20 Baylor Bears. Broome talked about while being excited for the opportunity, it does not take playing a highly-ranked opponent to motivate this team.
“I don’t think it gives us an extra boost," Broome said. "This team loves to compete. This team loves to play. Coach modifies us playing throughout the week – we’ll play one or two days but other days we’ll keep it light so we can be ready for games like that.
I think everyone will be fired up and ready to play against someone else. Especially to open up the game against Baylor in a neutral site. That’ll be a fun game to watch.”
Auburn and Baylor square off at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Nov. 7. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT and ESPN will carry the broadcast.
