What is Auburn football's deepest unit in 2023?
Auburn football has had to revamp a decent chunk of its roster.
With graduation and the portal taking its toll on both sides of the ball, Hugh Freeze and his staff had to go out and hit the portal in order to reestablish the talent level the Tigers previously had before Harsin.
So far, they've accomplished their goals.
Experience is something the Tigers have in spades at certain spots throughout the two-deep, but there are some positions that lack depth. Take a look at our stat of the day.
Stat of the day:
Here are the returning total snaps for each position on Auburn's roster - including transfers (NOTE: These are 2022 snaps only, all from Pro Football Focus).
WR - 1,403 snaps (9 players)
TE - 1,086 snaps (5 players)
T - 1,989 snap (3 players - 1 snap before transfers)
G - 755 snaps (3 players)
C - 1,199 snaps (3 players)
HB - 911 snaps (4 players)
QB - 825 snaps (3 players)
CB - 2,273 (4 players)
DL - 2,528 snaps (9 players)
EDGE - 438 snaps (2 players)
LB - 1,556 snaps (8 players)
S - 1,905 snaps (7 players)
Here's what the average snap count looks like for an individual player at every position, ranked from most to least:
OT - 663 snaps
CB - 568 snaps
C - 399 snaps
DL - 281 snaps
QB - 275 snaps
S - 272 snaps
G - 251 snaps
HB - 228 snaps
EDGE - 219 snaps
TE - 217 snaps
LB - 194 snaps
WR - 156 snaps
What it means:
Some of these numbers may look skewed.
Auburn only has three offensive tackles on roster that played a snap last season, but it's the most experienced unit based on snaps per player. It would be higher, but Auburn's lone returnee in that department had one snap last year. Dillon Wade and Gunner Britton really help out here.
It's pretty clear that the defensive back room is the Tigers' strength this season (as far as depth is concerned), as evidenced by their snap count numbers. Defensive line and wide receiver are also areas of significant depth.
Offensive tackle and EDGE are the two biggest concerns for Auburn, hands down. Keldrick Faulk and Dylan Brooks should expect to be thrown into the fire early, especially if other players don't step up/injury occurs.
