Coach Hugh Freeze is making some accountability adjustments on the Plains
It is looking to be a new day on the practice field at Auburn as Coach Hugh Freeze begins to “Call Up” players in response to their performances on the field as the opening kickoff for the 2023 season will quickly be upon us.
Coach Freeze has frequently commented about the “loafing” and “lack of explosiveness” being displayed by numerous players on Auburn’s roster throughout fall camp thus far. Recognizing the need for increased accountability on and off the field, Coach Freeze has felt the need to return to being the “practice jerk,” as he called it this past Saturday in his press conference with the media.
Coach Freeze has already called a few players up in regard to some issues with their performance, asking Tigers cornerback Keionte Scott “Have we decided to tackle today” and Tigers newest wide receiver Jyaire Shorter, “Are you going to make a play today.” These “Call Ups” are in no way meant to demean or degrade his players on the roster but to inspire them to come to the field ready to play and perform to the best of their ability all the time, not just on game day.
The old adage “practice makes perfect” can be slightly misleading to those who have never played at this level, and the correct approach should always be “perfect practice makes perfect.” This seems to be the mindset that Coach Freeze is looking to instill in his coaching staff and all of his players, from the starters to the scout teams. Hopefully, this approach will be looked at as a constructive way of accomplishing the accountability and drive for excellence that Coach Freeze expects of his players.
With less than two weeks before the season opener, Coach Freeze is looking to reach the 80 to 90-percent buy-in in the program he feels is necessary for this team to perform at its best this 2023 football season. This approach and demand for accountability will likely resonate well with the Auburn fan base and should translate to better performances come game day. We have a lot to look forward to as it is genuinely a new day on the Plains.
