Jake Crain responds to Payton Thorne being named Auburn's starting quarterback
With the recent announcement from Coach Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers that Peyton Thorne will be the starting quarterback for the season opener against UMass on September 2nd there have been some questions regarding Robby Ashford’s involvement with the offense this upcoming season.
Jake Crain addressed some of these questions with a recent video Tweet, commenting that barring any ill will or disappointment with the decision, Robby Ashford will remain an integral part of the offensive unit for the Auburn Tigers in 2023.

Robby Ashford’s athletic capabilities are very apparent and have been commented on by many in the sports broadcasting community. Leading off from this general consensus opinion from the media and analysts at large, we ask the question where will Robby fit into the Auburn Tigers offense in 2023?
Jake Crain believes, and I sincerely agree that Robby Ashford will have specific schemes and packages prepared for him to execute. Several options that Robby would be the ideal man under center for are short yardage and red-zone situations while also including a wide array of gadget plays.
These plays will likely include but are not limited to; screen passes with the ability to catch the opposing defenses out of position with a capable passer and someone who is dangerous when running in open field, gadget plays like the jet sweep and reverse jet sweep with Brian Battie likely being in the backfield to compliment Robby’s running ability with his own just to name a few. These are all possibilities that could come to fruition this season with Peyton Thorne as the main play caller under center.
It is important to note that this has been an incredible battle to be the man in the driver seat and all the quarterbacks in the room have poured their hearts and souls into this competition. The Auburn faithful should be and feel proud that all these young men have worked to win this job, and all will continue to be important members of the Auburn football roster and family. I believe I can say this speaking for the Auburn Family we are all looking forward to the inaugural kickoff of the 2023 season, War Eagle to our beloved Auburn Tigers.
