Auburn Equestrian took their first road trip of the season out to Waco, Tx, to face Baylor. The meet figured to be a tough first test for new Head Coach Jessica Braswell’s Tigers. When the dust had settled, Auburn had passed the test with flying colors.

How the Meet Went

The meet’s action began with Equitation Over Fences. Both teams return a host of high-powered starters from last season, so good scores here offered the chance to seize control of the meet from the outset.

All five Auburn Fences riders won their points. Meet control seized.

Graduate Ava Stearns, senior Ellie Ferrigno, juniors Anna Marie Mayes, Mary-Grace Segars and Sophee Steckbeck orchestrated a perfect sweep in the event, with Steckbeck receiving Most Outstanding Performance for her ride.

After that, it was time for Horsemanship’s riders to take their turns in the saddle. Here, Auburn sophomores Alexia Tordoff and Caroline Fredenburg, along with freshman Alexis Potts each bested their Baylor counterparts. Freshman Sydney Swallom was also able to earn a no-point draw with her opponent, making the final event score 3-1 Tigers. Tordoff’s ride was also awarded Most Outstanding.

Auburn’s 8-1 halftime lead reflected the Tiger’s early dominance in the meet. Two more points, and victory would be assured.

Once Equitation on the Flat got started, Auburn didn’t have to wait long for those two points.

Ferrigno, Stearns, and Segars won their points, with Segars winning the event MOP. The 3-2 advantage in the event meant the Tigers could begin celebrating with the meet victory assured.

But with Reining still to ride, Auburn’s celebrations continued. As was the case in Fences, if a rider was wearing an Auburn jersey, they won their point. Seniors Kate Buchanan, Olivia Marino, and Isabella Tesmer, along with sophomores Caroline Buchanan and Alexia Tordoff each heard a familiar, “POINT AUBURN” after their names. Tordoff would also capture her second MOP of the day.

The victory over #8 Baylor was an impressive showing for the second-ranked Tigers.

Up Next for Auburn

Auburn will hit the road again next week, traveling to UT Martin Friday, October 13, at 10 am Central. The Skyhawks are unranked, losing their first two meets on the road at South Carolina and Georgia.

Road wins in college equestrian can be tough to come by, even against seemingly overmatched opponents. But Auburn proved on Friday they can make even the tough victories look effortless.
