Cal Adds Houston Transfer Offensive Lineman Trevonte Sylvester

Sylvester played behind an all-conference left tackle as a redshirt freshman with the Cougars in 2022

Cal continues to restock its offensive line with transfers as Houston transfer Trevonte Sylvester committed to Cal on Sunday.  Sylvester, who was a redshirt freshman this past season for the Cougars, made his announcement on his twitter account.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Sylvester played in all 12 games this past season but did not make any starts.  That's because he was playing behind two-time all-conference left tackle Patrick Paul. Sylvester played 114 snaps, including special teams, and played 42 snaps on offense this past season. He did not allow any sacks or quarterback hurries in his pass-blocking chances.

Sylvester did not play in any games in 2021 as a true freshman, although he was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

Houston went 8-5 this past season, including 5-3 in the American Athletic Conference, and beat Louisiana in the Independence Bowl.

Sylvester is from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, and he was primarily a defensive end in high school, but he was switched to the offensive side at Houston.

Cal picked up another offensive line transfer from Texas A&M, Matthew Wykoff just a few days ago, The Golden Bears also got a commitment from high school offensive lineman Tyler Knape two weeks ago.

The offensive line was Cal's biggest weakness this past season, and that led to offensive line coach Angus McClure being dismissed with two games left in the 2022 season.  Mike Bloesch was hired as his replacement and is charged with txhe task of improving the Bears up front.
