Raiders Waive QB Chase Garbers -- Again

Las Vegas lets go of the former Cal quarterback for the second time in four weeks

It’s one thing to get waived once by an NFL team, but former Cal quarterback Chase Garbers has now been waived twice by the same team in less than four weeks.

Garbers was waived by the Raiders on July 26, then was re-signed by Las Vegas on August 7. On Sunday (August 27) he was waived again by the Raiders. He was among seven players waived by the Raiders as they get closer to getting down to the 53-man roster for the regular season.

The release of Garbers was not a surprise. He was signed when it was determined that starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would not play in the Raiders’ first preseason game. But Garoppolo returned for the second preseason game, giving the Raiders four quarterbacks, along with Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell.

Garbers was fourth on the quarterback depth chart, and did not get much playing time in the two preseason games. He was 8-of-11 for 57 yards and one touchdown in two games, including 5-for-6 for 47 yards in Las Vegas' game this past weekend.

Garbers, who was not taken in the 2022 NFL draft, spent much of last season on the Raiders practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster when it was determined that Derek Carr would no longer play for the Raiders. Garbers served as the backup quarterback for the final two games and was re-signed by the Raiders in the offseason.

Now Garbers will try to sign on with another team or may try to join the Raiders’ practice squad again.
