Brett Yormark Discusses Big 12 Expansion And More at Media Days
CINCINNATI — UC athletics is one of the newest members of the Big 12 but commissioner Brett Yormark hinted that won't be the case for long. Yormark fielded plenty of questions at Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday, including the timeline for adding more teams to hit a strong 14 school mark.
“We do have a plan, and hopefully we can execute that plan sooner than later,” Yormark said to the media. “But as I’ve always said, I love the composition of this conference right now. The excitement the four new members have brought to this conference has been incredible. If we stay at 12, we’re perfectly fine with that. If the opportunity presents itself where there’s something that creates value and aligns well with our goals and objectives, starting with the board, then we’re certainly going to pursue it.”
Rumors have swirled around two schools in particular: Colorado and Arizona. The Pac-12 powers could be strong candidates to fill out a 14-team vision that Yormark's discussed in recent months.
“Listen, they know brand,” Yormark said about Colorado. “I’m a brand guy. I think they’ve done an incredible job. If you look at how they’re elevating and amplifying their brand and engaging with their fans, they’ve done a wonderful job, so I wish them well.”
In other news, Yormark confirmed the Big 12's football championship game is getting played at AT&T Stadium in Texas through 2030 thanks to a new agreement. That also aligns with the league's renewed TV deal with ESPN and Fox through 2031.
Yormark also confirmed the league is unveiling a fresh logo next year and will feature a "major artist" during the Big 12 halftime show.
