Two Clemson Tigers Named First-Team All-Americans by Phil Steele

Clemson's season opener against Duke is fast approaching. Two Clemson defenders were named to college football writer Phil Steele's All-American First Team.

As we approach mid-June every year, the excitement for the return of college football goes into overdrive. Recruits are visiting schools all over the country, countdowns to kickoff are under 90 days, and, of course, preseason magazines are hitting newsstands.

With just under three months to go until the 2023 season begins, the most revered of those magazines - Phil Steele's College Football Preview - has been released, and with it a plethora of analysis, rankings, and honors. Steele named his Preseason All-American teams and the Clemson Tigers made on the First Team.

Both defensive lineman Tyler Davis and linebacker Barrett Carter were honored with First-Team status. Davis, a super senior, is back for his 5th season of football at Clemson. In 2023, Davis returned to form, recording 9.5 tackles for loss and piling up 5.5 sacks. Both were his highest totals since he took home the ACC Newcomer of the Year in 2019.

As for Barrett Carter, this season is poised to be massive for the rising junior. Like Davis, Carter sacked opposing quarterbacks 5.5 times last year and tallied 10.5 total tackles for loss. Playing every linebacker spot for Clemson, Carter, along with his running mate Jeremiah Trotter, make Clemson's defense one of the most formidable in the country.

While Carter and Davis were named to the First Team, running back Will Shipley and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were named to the Third Team. You can see the full list here.
