Will Shipley Reveals Dabo's Main Recruiting Pitch
After this past week of success and positive news for Clemson recruiting, an old theme has popped up again around Twitter and social media. It's the question of what Clemson, and Dabo Swinney in particular, pitch to land these high-level recruits almost immediately after their visits.
Will Shipley, a former 5-star recruit himself, reveals that it might not be such a magical strategy after all but rather one that simply focuses on the player himself. On the Next Up podcast hosted by Adam Breneman, Shipley was asked what Dabo's main recruiting pitch was and the junior running back answered, "I think just how much he cares about his players not as football players but as humans and as men. His number one thing is he wants to see you graduate, and then he wants to see you grow as a man, and then he wants to see the success on the field. In that order. That was a huge thing for my family and I. Once you get to this level of college football, you don't see that very often. You got a lot of these places, and I'll use the term "football factories", they care about what you do on the field and that's not what I wanted. So for Coach Swinney to emphasize that stuff was a huge reason and one of his best recruiting pitches that he continues to come back to even today."
Couldn't any coach say those same things? The probability that a version of that pitch is used at most major programs to varying degrees seems high, but the proof seems to be in the pudding with Dabo Swinney that when he tells a kid he cares about them first, before football, judging by how past players have characterized their former coach, he truly means it. That's a powerful draw for any young person entering a crucial point in their life. To know that someone is looking after their life as much as what the player can give them on the field. It's a pitch that seems to be working yet again as Clemson has moved into the top ten of the recruiting rankings of all major services.
