Florida State Coaches Praise Conrad Hussey's Progress Following Breakout Performance

From camp standout to breaking into the rotation, Hussey is on his way to being an impact player.

No. 4 Florida State brought in a talented freshman class in the offseason, ranking 16th in the country, which featured numerous blue-chip recruits and future stars. True freshman Conrad Hussey, a 6-foot-0, 185-pound safety out of St. Thomas Aquinas, has shown promise thus far in his Seminole career.

In last week's 39-17 win over Virginia Tech, the former four-star recruit had three tackles and delivered a massive hit to force a fumble late in the game.

"When he got a chance to go and attack he definitely did that," head coach Mike Norvell said at his Monday morning presser.

Hussey has been showing flashes throughout the season and even during fall camp you could tell. Coaches have known all along that he could be special.

"Conrad, being able to come in, we talked about him last week. He was coming off of really two weeks, the bye week and last week's practice where he’d taken some really positive steps," Norvell said of the young defensive back. "We knew we were going to get him in and we wanted to make sure that we got a chance to see him in that space and I thought he played confident in it."

Defensive coordinator Adam Fuller put his faith in Hussey as well to go out and execute. Both coaches have said in the past that no matter what year you are, freshman to senior if they put you out there then you've earned it.

"Conrad is somebody that I believe a lot in. He’s got a lot of ability, he loves football, plays with a lot of passion, energy," Fuller said. "He’s got a really good skillset and we knew that when we recruited him but everybody is on their different journey as far as the time and I thought that week, that bye week he really started to accelerate his play."

Hussey has five tackles on the season and, as a true freshman in a veteran secondary, playing time doesn't come as often. Still, his coaches continue to put him out there and when he does he makes the most of the opportunity.

"Obviously, there were some things as a true freshman, you get out there and it starts moving fast, there are a few things that he’s going to have to improve upon," Norvell said. "But what I loved is that there was no hesitation when it came to when he saw the ball."

Look to see Hussey and the Seminoles this Saturday, October 14 against the Syracuse Orange at 12:00 p.m.
