Florida State Ranks Second Among ACC Programs in Athletics Revenue for 2022

The Seminoles cap off a memorable 2022 season with the highest athletics revenue the program has garnered in four years.

Florida State University had a very successful 2022 year, both on and off the field. After capturing ACC championships in softball, women's soccer, and men's outdoor track and field, as well as a ten-win season for the football team which ended with a victory in the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando, it is clear to say that FSU is still home to one of the nations top athletic departments.

The victories helped FSU place 15th among all schools in the country for athletic revenue as they generated $161.1 million dollars per USA Today. They rank 2nd in earnings amongst ACC schools (Virginia was ranked 14th with $161.9 million). The only other ACC schools ranked in the top 25 were Clemson (17th) and Louisville (23rd).

The ACC ranked third among Power 5 conferences in median revenue, behind the SEC, which had a median revenue of $159.1 million, and the Big Ten which had a median revenue of $150.1 million.

The correlations between a winning football team and high revenue are very clear for the Seminoles, as 2022 was FSU’s first winning season since 2017. The program also had the highest revenue since 2017-2018.

Despite this turnaround year putting FSU in the news for earnings, it isn’t ticket sales that brought in all the money. It was contributors. In fact, contributions were the second highest they have been since 2005, while ticket sales were higher every year from 2012-2019 than they were in 2022.

While ticket sales were not as high as they have been in the past, Athletic Director Michael Alford hired two former Noles to take over as head coaches of the teams they played on with Brooke Wyckoff taking over as the head coach of the women's basketball team, and leading the team to March Madness in her first season, and Link Jarrett taking over the baseball team that reached a peak ranking of 21st in the nation.

Needless to say, Florida State Athletics are on an upward trend when it comes to earnings, and 2023 has only proven to aid that with the softball team reaching the championship of the women's college world series, and the football team being ranked third in ESPN’s updated top 25 college football teams.
