FSU Football Fall Camp Observations: Seminoles Complete Final Practice Ahead Of Second Scrimmage

A shortened session for the Seminoles ahead of a preseason scrimmage on Sunday morning in Doak.

Florida State is preparing for its second scrimmage of preseason camp which is scheduled for Sunday morning inside Doak Campbell Stadium. With roughly 24 hours until the intensity and physicality are cranked up, the Seminoles participated in a shortened session on Saturday morning that was focused on special teams and fundamentals.

The practice lasted over an hour and a half as the team donned shells. In what was Florida State's fifth straight day on the practice fields, the team still displayed plenty of energy and excitement as they put their 14th session of the preseason behind them.

NoleGameday was in attendance for the entire practice and jotted down some observations from the session.

— It was a bounce-back day for Florida State's kickers after a couple of inconsistent practices. Ryan Fitzgerald and Tyler Keltner connected on all five of their live attempts during practice. Fitzgerald was good from 21 yards, 32 yards, and 43 yards. Keltner matched him from 32 yards and 43 yards. A good sign ahead of the final stretch of preseason camp.

— The Seminoles went through a drill to simulate rushing off the edge to block a punt early in practice. Players had to take an angle by two assistants holding a bag and dodge a tackling dummy before knocking a football off a cone. John Papuchis was extremely pleased with a rep from Shyheim Brown as his raspy voice boomed through the IPF, "good rep, Shy."

OFFENSE:

— I will warn the readers yet again, there's not going to be a ton of observations today due to the nature of the practice and the fact it was a shorter day. The Seminoles didn't do a ton of team drills, 1-on-1's, or 7-on-7 ahead of the scrimmage but there were still some notable moments.

— Florida State's offense ran tempo drills on air early in practice. Despite no defense being in front of them, head coach Mike Norvell was pushing the unit harder than ever. The ball was consistently being snapped within 7-8 seconds of the 40-second play clock going up. SPEED!

— Jordan Travis and Brock Glenn stood out amongst the quarterbacks in a footwork drill early in practice. Tony Tokarz seemed pretty happy with Glenn's work during the period.

— Travis connected with Kyle Morlock on back-to-back plays to kick off 7-on-7 work as 'Highway to Hell' blared in the IPF. The second throw was in a tight window over the middle of the field with two defenders in the area.

— A teaching moment for Brock Glenn. He checked down on a pass that Norvell wanted him to throw deep to a receiver on the sideline. The two had an extended conversation and watched the play over on the video board. From there, Glenn seemed to elevate his performance, connecting on a tough roll-out throw to the sideline before scanning and finding a running back scampering over the middle of the field.

— Noticed Trey Benson, Lawrance Toafili, and Samuel Singleton all getting involved in the passing game with a variety of routes.

DEFENSE:

— Jared Verse and Byron Turner Jr. flashed in position drills while working with John Papuchis on footwork and hand placement. Verse was constantly talking to younger players after reps to provide tips.

— I thought it was another pretty good day for safety Shyheim Brown. He nearly picked off a pass that was thrown deep down the middle to Johnny Wilson, jumping the route with a vertical effort. Brown was also instrumental in forcing a coverage sack on Travis, emphatically letting him know about it following the play. He picked off a pass in the end zone during team drills where both sides were working on last-play situations.

— Renardo Green played a big role in preventing an incompletion to Johnny Wilson on the sideline. Couldn't tell if he got the deflection but he was in the right position to at least break it up.

— Odell Haggins pulled Darrell Jackson to the side after a rep in 1-on-1's to focus on hand placement.
