Trey Benson is Finding His Stride At The Right Time For Seminoles

Benson had his best game of the season against Virginia Tech as he broke the 200+ yard mark for the first time in his career.

The Florida State Seminoles had plenty of hype building heading into this season. With so many returners on top of key additions through recruiting and the transfer portal, the Seminoles were a top-ten team as the season started.

A big part of that hype was Trey Benson's contributions, as he had a breakout season last year. The Oregon transfer hadn't seen the most game time, but in the latter half of last season, Benson eclipsed more than 100 yards in four of the last five games. He played his way into a bigger role and more snaps.

This season, though, Benson started off slow. While he had a three-touchdown game against Southern Miss, his impact hadn't quite been the same compared to last season. That is until a Week 6 matchup against Virginia Tech.

On 11 touches, Benson totaled 200 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, which was good for a new career high in rushing yards per game.

"Trey had a big day. You know, it was good to get him rolling," Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell said after the game.

Heading into the season, some of the added hype came when it was released that Benson had gained additional muscle and had gotten bigger, though it took time for him to figure out how to use it.

"He's got the combination of all the things you want. He's big, he's powerful. Obviously, he'll run tough in between the tackles, but also has homerun hitting speed out when he gets out there on the edge," Norvell said.

Having Benson's capability of long plays, which he showed with a 62-yard touchdown run and an 85-yard touchdown run, is an incredible asset, but being able to use his body and frame in a sluggish, grind-it-out game makes him that much more valuable.

He's finding his stride at a good time, as the Seminoles are 5-0 and are continuing to build a hopeful College Football Playoff appearance that will need to see Florida State win out the rest of the schedule if they want to reach their goals in the postseason.
