On Tuesday, rising junior and four-star quarterback Michael Tollefson announced that he was committing to Arizona State. The decision is a major victory for new head coach Kenny Dillingham on the recruiting trail who beat out Florida State, Miami, Michigan State, Oregon, and others for his services.
The Seminoles were a contender for Tollefson but weren't expected to land his commitment after adding three-star quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. in April. Both players are extremely talented but FSU went with Jones Jr. due to his promixity in the program's recruiting footprint, upside, and connections to other top targets.
Tollefson was previously in Tallahassee in March to visit Florida State for the Seminole Legacy recruiting event. At the time, he even admitted that his connection to the Seminoles began with Dillingham, who served as the program's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2020-21.
"Just the relationship I've built. I've been talking to Florida State for a couple of years now," Tollefson said previously. "I've had relationships ever since coach Dillingham was here and then when coach Dillingham left, coach Tokarz and coach Norvell. Just really the way that the relationship has built, stacked up over the years."
The California native completed 146/279 passes (52.3%) for 1,567 yards with eight touchdowns to five interceptions as a sophomore. He also rushed 162 times for 644 yards (4 YPC) and nine more scores.
Tollefson is the next piece in Dillingham's turnaround of the quarterback room at Arizona State. He landed four-star signal-caller Jaden Rashada late in the process and also brought in Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne.
Ahead of his first season as a head coach at the FBS level with his alma mater, Dillingham has his program sitting in a solid position.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback is regarded as the No. 20 overall prospect, the No. 2 QB, and the No. 3 recruit in the state of California in the 2025 class according to 247Sports.
